The voyage which this journal covers commenced at Sydney on 5 March 1854 and from there went to Port Stephens, Moreton Bay, Port Curtis, Lord Howe Island, and back to Sydney on 10 May 1854. The succeeding part of the journal describes cruising off the coast of Port Jackson, a visit to Port Stephens, and finally a voyage to Port Phillip. The journal was kept daily and describes the weather, ships encountered, ship-board activities and a description by Marshall of a trip to the Darling Downs.
